Effective January 1, 2016, the State has changed the name of Texas Concealed Handgun License (CHL) to Texas License To Carry (LTC) in order to incorporate the Open Carry Laws into the same program. Starting January 1, 2016, all licensees may carry their handgun openly. For current license holders, as well as new applicants, no additional training or fee is required. The weapon is required to be secured in a holster. No hand carrying will be allowed. Additionally, the law does give a law enforcement officer the right to ask an open carrier to see his “concealed” handgun license. One other important change, the law also gives a private business owner, who does not have a problem with concealed carry, but prefers to not have open carry in their establishment, the right to post an official sign (30.07) at all entrances to prohibit the open carry inside their premises.
Texas Law mandates that the course be at least 4-6 hrs in length to exclude the range qualification. This will take effect Sept. 2013. Please bring your handgun (.22 Cal Minimum) and 100 rounds of ammunition, 50 are required for qualification the extra 50 are for those that fail to qualify the first time. YOU MAY BRING YOUR OWN AMMO AS LONG AS IT IS US MADE WITH BRASS CASINGS, NO RELOADS. If you currently don’t have a handgun you can rent one of mine for $30 which includes the ammunition.

Renewals will no longer be required to attend a class or qualify on the range effective Sept. 2013. All you will need to do is register with the state and agree to the required CHL requirements on use of deadly force.
